stress
[stress] (noun): physical, mental, or emotional
strain/tension - synonyms:
worry, burden, anxiety, pressure.
Does this definition sound familiar?
Life can be stressful. We all face
different obstacles and challenges, and some times the
pressure gets just too hard to handle. We may find
ourselves unsure of even overwhelmed how to meet the
demands that have been placed on us. The end
result -- we experience STRESS.
Small doses of stress can sometimes be a
good thing. It can give you that push needed
to motivate yourself to stay focused and do your best.
Stress is also what keep you on your toes when you need
to perform (i.e. doing a work presentation).
Unfortunately when the demands of your
life begin to exceed your ability to cope with whatever
it is you are experiencing at the present time, stress
can become a threat to both your physical
and your emotional well-being. If this kind of
stress continues without relief, it can lead to
distress -- a negative stress reaction.
It is vital to you health and well-being to take actions
to help manage and/or alleviate this negative stress.
While there are a few different kinds of
stress (acute, episodic, chronic and traumatic) and many
potential causes of these different stresses, it is very
important you are aware of YOUR stress level, what may
be causing it, and most importantly, have the knowledge
to be able to help manage it effectively or seek a
mental health professional or M.D. |
